Artist Statement

I’m lucky

I’m lucky because I discovered the joy of making art when I was very young.

I’m very lucky because my parents and teachers took notice. They nurtured my passion to draw and paint through encouragement, by providing opportunities for me to experiment and grow, and celebrating my creations.

Although I didn’t pursue a career in art, I found ways to continue creating around work and other daily commitments. I experimented with various media, took classes, participated in art shows and found inspiration among kindred spirits. To this day, I continue this artful journey.

The collection in the exhibit at Trinity Episcopal Church in Concord, MA includes works in colored pencil, graphite, watercolor, pastel, acrylic and pen. You’ll see many images of people and faces – both real and imaginary. Nature is also one of my favorite subjects – especially birds, flowers and autumn leaves (I love being outdoors, regardless of the weather!).

A third subject in this exhibit is called “Zentangle-inspired art” (ZIA). Zentangle is a method of drawing works of art using detailed patterns. At its core, it was developed to promote mindfulness and relaxation.

As far as style goes, I like to challenge myself to create realistic images. I also have fun creating whimsical art with a colorful, lighthearted mood.

I love to create pictures that capture ordinary moments. I focus especially on this during the month of December leading up to Christmas. Each day I produce a drawing or painting and post it on social media with a descriptive comment.  I’ve been doing this for thirteen years, because people look forward to seeing this virtual “advent calendar”.  It makes them happy. The images and stories often give them pause to reflect on their own memories or what they enjoy about that time of year.

In addition to the intrinsic satisfaction I feel from creating, I get immense joy from people who express how much they love looking at my art and the connections they make to it. The art I create is a means of storytelling and celebrating the beauty that exists in nature, patterns, and ordinary life. Through sharing my own artful journey, I hope to inspire others to embrace their own creativity and to find joy in the act of making.
